A good size IMARI charger decorated in the typical palette, the centre gilt triple star within a border depicting various scenes.

This is a good quality charger having no chips cracks or abrasions through over cleaning. It has survived intact for 100 years and will make a fine addition to a collection, or simply to add to the decor of a fine home.

FAQs

Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export wares produced in the Arita area of Hizen province and shipped from the port of Imari. Developed in the seventeenth century, the style is defined by underglaze cobalt blue paired with overglaze iron-red enamels and gilt detailing.

Pieces are formed from kaolin clay, fired at high temperatures to achieve a hard white porcelain body, and first decorated with underglaze cobalt blue. After the initial firing, overglaze enamels such as iron-red, green, and turquoise are applied alongside gold leaf before a second lower-temperature firing.

Authentic pieces from the Meiji era display characteristic hand-painted variations, subtle imperfections in the glaze, and unglazed foot rims showing greyish or off-white porcelain. Overglaze enamels often show slight raised texture, while gilding may exhibit natural surface wear.

An Imari charger can be mounted using an invisible wire hanger to create a focal point on a neutral feature wall or displayed upright on a wooden plate stand atop a sideboard. The rich contrast of cobalt blue and rust-red works effectively against dark wood, stone walls, or muted painted backdrops.

Clean gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove dust. If washing is necessary, use lukewarm water and mild liquid detergent without soaking, taking care not to rub areas with delicate gilding or overglaze enamels.
