Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Card tables gained popularity in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries as parlour games and social card playing became central to upper-class entertainment. Designs evolved through various periods, from Queen Anne gateleg models to Victorian pedestal tables featuring swivel tops and hidden compartments for chips or counters.

Preserve wooden surfaces by keeping them away from direct sunlight and fluctuating radiator heat to prevent timber splitting or veneer lifting. Clean only with a soft, dry cloth and occasionally feed the wood with quality beeswax, avoiding modern silicone-based polishes entirely.

An antique card table works effectively as a console in an entrance hall or positioned against a living room wall with a minimalist ceramic vase or lamp placed on top. The contrasting textures of dark timber add warmth and historical depth when paired with contemporary seating and neutral colour palettes.

Authentication involves examining the timber grain, secondary woods inside the frame, hand-cut dovetails, and signs of age-appropriate oxidisation and wear. Genuine pieces usually feature traditional hand-applied finishes like shellac or french polish, alongside structural wear patterns consistent with centuries of use.

Authentic period card tables were predominantly constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, walnut, or oak, often finished with decorative veneers and fine brass hardware. Joinery techniques typically included mortise and tenon frames, dovetailed drawers, and intricate hand-carved details or turned pedestals.
