Nishapur Buffware Pottery Bowl 10th. Century

17th century
Description

Fine and rare 10th century Persian Nishapur buffware pottery bowl decorated in green, yellow and manganese, in the interior with stylized birds and animal and boteh shaped panels of foliage. The exterior with vertical lines to the rim. Damaged and repaired as usual. From a private Scottish collection of Islamic Pottery formed over 50 years ago. Many similar items can be seen in Metropolitan Museum of Art.

SIZE; 20.5cm diameter, 6.5cm high.

Situated on the great plateau of central Iran, Nishapur was for centuries an important political and cultural centre: a seat of governmental power in eastern Islam, a dwelling place for diverse ethnic and religious groups, a trading stop on commercial routes from Transoxiana and China, Iraq and Egypt. Nishapur's most significant period when the buffware was produced extended from the ninth century to 1221, when, after repeated earthquake disasters and military occupations, the city was devastated by the Mongols

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
