Japanese cloisonne reached its technical peak during the Meiji period, when master artisans created highly detailed decorative objects, including miniature screens, for both domestic display and export.

These pieces are constructed using a metal base, typically copper or brass, with thin metal wires forming compartments (cloisons) that are filled with coloured enamel paste and fired multiple times.

Authentic pieces often feature fine wirework, subtle variations in enamel colour due to hand-firing, and sometimes maker marks or signatures associated with renowned workshops such as Inaba.

Place the screen on a flat surface such as a mantelpiece, side table, or desk where light can reflect off the enamel and brass framework to highlight the intricate craftsmanship.

Keep the screens out of direct sunlight to prevent fading, dust them gently with a soft, dry cloth, and avoid using liquid cleaners or harsh chemicals on the enamel and metal surfaces.
