FAQs

Burr walnut refers to the swirling, highly figured grain pattern harvested from growth deformations on walnut trees. It gained immense popularity during the late 17th century in the William and Mary period, and experienced major revivals during the Victorian and Art Deco eras.

Cabinet makers typically apply thin slices of highly figured burr walnut veneer over a stable secondary wood core, such as pine or mahogany, using traditional animal glues. This technique highlights complex grain patterns while preventing the warping common in solid burr timber.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut veneers with natural variations, traditional joinery methods such as dovetails or dowels, and signs of age like oxidation and minor surface wear beneath hand-applied French polish or wax finishes.

A figured wood table serves as a strong focal point and pairs well with neutral upholstery, clean-lining modern sofas, and minimalist decor to let the natural wood grain stand out without visual clutter.

Maintain walnut furniture by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the veneer from drying or cracking. Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and occasionally apply a quality beeswax to nourish the wood finish.
