Mark Seabrook Antiques has dated this piece to the 19th Century.
...the downside of the rattle, was that it could not be heard as far away as the whistle and also if the rattle was wrestled from the officers grasp, it could be used against him by hitting him with it....this one has the initials of the owner W.T and the date 1874 set into lead discs....the rattle is in very good condition with a fine colour that "aged" beech goes.
