Description

This is an impressive salt-glazed stoneware preserve jar stamped "IC Hoffmann Rassberry Jam".....I love the way he has spelt Rassberry.... these named jars are rarely seen as they were for domestic use and were often broken up when empty. This fine example dates to about 1840, and was used for home use as well as to export jams and preserves to English colonies abroad, often by sea, so the jars had to be made strong enough to withstand the sometimes rough and long sea journeys...similar named Hoffmann jars have been attributed to a London pottery run by John Wisker in Vauxhall..... this fine example is in very good condition with no restoration and a fine colour...

English. C1840-60.

Salt glazing is a historic pottery technique where common salt is thrown into the kiln during the high-temperature firing process, reacting with the silica in the clay to produce a vitreous, pebble-textured surface.

These utility vessels were thrown using dense local clays containing high proportions of silica and alumina, fired at extreme temperatures to ensure impermeability for food storage.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit characteristic orange-peel surface texture from salt vaporization, hand-stamped maker or merchant inscriptions, minor kiln flaws, and natural wear consistent with utilitarian age.

Antique pottery can be displayed individually as sculptural objects on open shelving, or repurposed as rustic vessels for dried botanicals and kitchen utensils.

Preservation requires gentle cleaning with warm water and a soft brush, avoiding harsh chemical detergents that can penetrate porous historic clay bodies or damage aged surfaces.
