FAQs

A lowboy is a small wooden side table featuring one or more rows of drawers, originating in the late 17th century and remaining popular throughout the Georgian era. Historically, they were utilised as dressing tables or writing desks in bedchambers and parlours.

These tables were typically crafted from native timbers such as oak, pine, elm, or walnut, and occasionally faced with finer veneers like mahogany. Construction features often include hand-cut dovetail joints in the drawers, pegged mortise and tenon framing, and solid timber secondary woods.

Authentication involves examining timber shrinkage, hand-forged iron or brass fixings, tool marks from traditional hand planes, and original surface treatments such as historic paint layers or patina. Signs of genuine age include wear patterns consistent with centuries of use and period-appropriate construction methods.

An antique lowboy functions effectively as a hallway console, a compact writing desk, or a sophisticated bedside table. Pairing its historical patina with minimalist decor or modern lighting creates a balanced juxtaposition that highlights its craftsmanship.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity and temperature levels to prevent timber movement and paint flaking. Surfaces should be cleaned gently with a dry or barely damp microfiber cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or modern silicone polishes.
