FAQs

Pocket and travelling roulette games became popular in the 19th and early 20th centuries as portable versions of casino entertainment, allowing travellers and gentlemen to play parlour games on the move.

These sets were typically crafted from turned hardwoods such as boxwood, beech, or fruitwood, often featuring hand-painted numbering and carved bone or ivory spinners and balls.

Authentic pieces usually display the characteristic tool marks of hand-turning on a lathe, aged patination on the wood, hand-applied paint, and wear consistent with age rather than modern synthetic finishes.

Such curiosities can be displayed on a bookshelf, coffee table, or desk as a focal point of historical interest and textural contrast within a curated interior scheme.

Preservation requires keeping wooden items away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations, applying microcrystalline wax sparingly to protect the surface, and avoiding harsh chemical cleaners.
