Marquetry involves fitting together decorative veneers of various wood types, flowers, and foliage to create pictorial or geometric designs on the surface, which became highly fashionable in European cabinet making during the 1700s.

These tables are typically constructed from a carcase of secondary wood such as oak or pine, veneered in rich timbers like walnut, burl walnut, or exotic woods, and assembled using traditional dovetail joints and hand-cut joinery.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the hand-cut dovetails, the type of secondary timbers used, the natural oxidisation and patina of the wood, and the presence of hand-engraved brass hardware consistent with the period.

Placing a historic timber piece in a contemporary setting provides textural contrast, allowing the intricate wood grain and inlaid patterns to stand out against neutral walls and modern minimalist decor.

Maintain antique marquetry by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer cracking, and apply microcrystalline wax periodically rather than modern silicone polishes.
