Very Fine Quality Regency Centre Table Made of Macassar Ebony

19th century
Description

A very fine quality Regency centre table made of an exceptionally good cut of Macassar ebony which has been applied with absolute symmetry and precision. This timber is so rare that it is almost extinct, it comes from Celebes island in the East Indies and, ironically, despite growing on an island, it is no good for building a raft because it is so dense that it does not float on water. It is also so dense that it blunts woodworking tools, which makes the quality of this table even more remarkable. The proportions of this table are perfect, the carving is crisp, the construction is first rate and the structure is all of the finest mahogany. This table must have been a very important commission by one of the best furniture makers for a very fine house indeed.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Regency centre table is a freestanding, multi-purpose table produced during the early 19th century in Britain, designed to sit in the middle of a hall, drawing room, or library as a visual focal point.

Cabinetmakers during the Regency period frequently utilised rich exotic veneers such as Macassar ebony, rosewood, and mahogany, often paired with solid carved wood bases and brass fittings.

Authentic pieces feature characteristic period details such as hand-carved paw feet, gadrooned borders, heavy triform plinth bases, and book-matched natural figure veneers.

Position the table centrally in a spacious entrance hall or living room, anchored by an urn, oversized floral arrangement, or curated selection of books.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish sparingly along the grain to preserve the timber while avoiding direct heat and sunlight.
