Description

For sale a rare late antique octant with it's original mahogany carrying case. The octant is comprised of an ebony frame with a brass index arms and Vernier. It has an inlaid and engraved scale (0-105) and inlaid plates on the front of the frame. The front inlay on the central strut remains blank.

The left arm of the frame retains two lots three shades, one green two red which are fixed on a pivot between the index and horizon glasses, whilst the right has its original sighting pinnula which is screwed into the base. It has two brass feet for resting the instrument upon when not in use.

On the inside of the case lid is what we understand is the makers label which reads 'H. HUGHES. Optical, Nautical & Mathematical Instrument Maker 59 Fenchurch St, London'.

The H.HUGHES Company is listed in 'Barometer Makers & Retailers 1660 - 1900 by Edwin Banfield':

'HUGHES, Henry. w1830-76. Mathematical. Instrument maker. 120 Fenchurch St, London. He moved to 120 Fenchurch St around 1835where he established a Navigation Warehouse under the trade name of 'Little Midshipman'. This became a well known rendezvous for seamen. The street number was changes to 59 Fenchurch St in 1855.' it is also noted that he became a partner with his son c1876.

The approximate MAXIMUM dimensions are:

CASE: 13 inches / 33 cm long x 11 3/4 inches / 30 cm wide x 4 inches / 10 cm high

OCTANT: 11 3/4 inches / 30 cm long x 9 3/4 inches / 25 cm wide x 3 inches / 7.5 cm high

CONDITION: The octant appears to be in good condition with all elements moving freely. The are no cracks to the shades. There are some age related marks to the mirrors commensurate with age, please view photographs. The item is untested as this is not our area of expertise. The case is also in nice condition but does have a couple of chips to the corner on the top and bottom of the case and there are odd small shrinkage lines and general scuff all of which are commensurate with age and use. There is NO key to the case. Please study photographs carefully as they form part of the description and condition, as what you view is exactly what you will receive

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An octant is an early reflecting navigational instrument measuring angular distance, primarily used by mariners to calculate latitude by determining the altitude of celestial bodies above the horizon.

Traditional octants were typically constructed using dense hardwoods such as ebony or mahogany for the frame, brass for the indexing arm and sights, and bone or ivory for the inlaid graduated arcs.

Authentic period octants frequently feature engraved maker signatures on the index arm, original trade labels pasted inside a keystone-shaped wooden case, and natural oxidation on brass components.

An antique octant displayed open within its fitted mahogany case serves as a focal historic accent on an office desk, library bookshelf, or console sideboard.

Keep the instrument in a climate-controlled room to prevent wood movement, dust brass components with a dry microfibre cloth, and avoid abrasive polishes that strip historical patina.
