Fine Victorian Ship Woolwork

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Prometheus Antiques

A fine and charming Victorian ship woolwork depicting the Clio. The work is beautifully stitched with the ship under full sail in a wonderful setting, with a lighthouse in the background. The maker has rather interestingly left the base cloth to show through and represent the sails. The woolwork is in excellent untouched condition and is framed in the original maple frame. There have been many ships with the name Cleopatra but I feel the one depicted here is HMS Cleopatra and the woolwork dates to around C.1880. A great example of a ship woolwork with a superb untouched period look.
