Quilted American Cotton Coverlet, 2.26m X 2.26m

1920 - 1940
Description

A type normally attributed to New England, this charming appliqued quilt combines a simplicity of ornamentation with a very subtle and playful sense of movement. The leafy spirals which dominate the design are expressively drawn are placed at slightly different angles. The repeating horseshoe border and scattered stars add to the playfulness and create a lovely composition. Note also the subtle ton-sur-ton quilted leaves, adding a further dimension to the design. Clean and in excellent condition, this is a very good example of an underappreciated area of textile art.
