Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer cracking and fading. Clean only with a soft, dry cloth and periodically nourish the wood with a traditional beeswax polish.

A drop-leaf table works well as a versatile occasional piece in a living room, positioned beside a sofa or against a wall to save space. Its rich wood grain adds warmth and texture when contrasted with clean-lined modern upholstery and minimalist decor.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate joinery, hand-turned wooden components, natural timber ageing, and traditional hand-applied finishes like shellac or wax. Examination of the underside often reveals period hardware and hand-sawn secondary woods.

These tables were typically constructed from solid timbers such as mahogany, walnut, or oak, often veneered with highly figured burr walnut. Construction features included dovetail joints, delicate turned gateleg supports, and intricate marquetry or stringing inlay.

A Sutherland table is a type of narrow drop-leaf table that features narrow drop leaves and folding gatelegs to support them. It originated in the Victorian era, specifically during the mid-19th century, named after the Duchess of Sutherland.
