Originating in England during the late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, witch balls were hollow blown glass spheres hung in windows to ward off negative spirits, evil eyes, and ill fortune according to popular folk traditions.

These spheres were free-blown from glass and coated internally with mercury, tin, or lead compounds to create a reflective mirror finish, often fitted with a small metal or glass hanging loop at the top.
