Description

Antique mahogany extending dining table

This Antique mahogany extending dining table was made circa 1835.

The cabinetmaker used fine mahogany with an interesting fleck to the grain.

The table slides out on oak runners so that it can take any combination of the 4 leaves, so that you can set it to the number of guests you have. It is a comfortable 14 seat table when extended.

The dining table stands on the very desirable upturned tulip legs and stands on the original brass cup castors.

The frame stays in one place and the top slides open at each end, this allows for you and your guests to easily sit under the table and not having obstructions at the corners. It is a very clever way to get the most seating from a table.

Imagine the pride and joy this table will bring to you, especially as you entertain your family and friends around it.

It is bound to spark conversations to what would the original owners have chatted about as they sat around this table when it was first placed into a large wealthy owner’s home.

The 1830’s were a fascinating time in Britain’s history. Would they be discussing the abolishment of slavery in 1833, or the French Revolution of 1830 was also known as the July revolution, more likely though would have been talk of the ‘swing riots’ where the country people in the South and South-East had risen in anger about the new mechanisation of farming and the threat to their jobs. Starting with the destruction of threshing machines in Elham Valley in East Kent and the unrest moved to East Anglia and the whole of the South of England. Sadly, many of these rioters were treated harshly, some were sentenced to death whilst a great many were deported to New South Wales (Australia)

Extending dining tables gained significant popularity during the Victorian period as larger dinner parties became fashionable. Makers developed ingenious mechanical systems involving winders and removable leaves to accommodate varying numbers of guests.

These tables were typically constructed from dense timbers such as mahogany or oak, featuring solid wood frames and matched veneer tops. Construction often utilized internal runners, brass sockets, and heavy turned legs with castors for mobility.

Authenticity is indicated by hand-cut joints, original brass mechanisms, uniform timber ageing, and tool marks consistent with period craftsmanship rather than modern mass production.

Pairing a heavy timber table with minimalist modern seating creates a balanced contrast. Keeping the surface uncluttered allows the rich grain and traditional craftsmanship to serve as the focal point of the room.

Protect the surface from direct sunlight, moisture, and extreme temperature fluctuations by using coasters and table mats. Regular application of high-quality beeswax helps nourish the timber and maintain its natural lustre.
