Early 18th century furniture, spanning the late Stuart and early Georgian periods, is characterised by solid timber construction, simple rectangular proportions, and a transition from heavily carved ornamentation to simpler, more functional designs.

These pieces were predominantly constructed from solid English oak using traditional joinery methods such as mortise and tenon joints, hand-planed boards, pegged frames, and wrought iron or brass fixings.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-correct tool marks such as pit-sawing on the underside, hand-cut dovetails, timber shrinkage, natural patination from age, and appropriate handmade hardware or evidence of former fixings.

An antique oak table adds warmth, texture, and historical contrast to contemporary spaces, functioning effectively as a lamp table, hallway surface, or bedside table against minimalist neutral walls.

Preserve antique oak by maintaining stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources, avoiding silicone-based polishes, and periodically feeding the wood with traditional beeswax.
