This Victorian sand timer from the nineteenth century combines dark brown oak and pine with clear blown glass bulbs holding fine golden sand. The piece takes a cylindrical form held within a geometrical cage constructed from five heavily turned decorative baluster columns, connecting round circular top and bottom caps. Visible details include a faint ink script reading "1 Hour" on the top roundel, alongside a heavily textured timber grain and a warm patina across the wooden elements. Standing 18.5 cm high and 10 cm in diameter, the compact scale makes it suitable for placement on an office desk within a gentleman's library or study environment. The object operates as a functional timekeeping device with sand flowing freely between the glass chambers, serving as a decorative accessory for a traditional working interior.

Sand timers, also known as hourglasses, were widely used from the fourteenth century onwards for marine navigation, church services, and culinary timing prior to the widespread adoption of mechanical clocks.

Nineteenth-century hourglasses were typically constructed using hand-blown glass bulbs connected at a narrow waist, housed inside protective wooden frames crafted from hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut with turned spindles.

Authentic period pieces often exhibit subtle bubbles and irregularities within the hand-blown glass, signs of natural age-related wear around the wood joins, turned baluster columns, and fine silica sand inside.

An antique sand timer can be positioned on a contemporary office desk, styled within a dark academia bookshelf arrangement, or displayed alongside vintage books and brass objects on a sideboard.

To preserve a wooden hourglass, store it in a dry environment to prevent moisture from causing the sand to clump, clean the glass gently with a microfibre cloth, and condition the timber frame using natural beeswax.
