A loo table is a type of large pedestal table popular during the 19th century, designed specifically for the card game loo as well as for general parlour use. These tables typically feature a tilt-top mechanism to save space when not in use.

These tables are traditionally constructed using a solid timber frame, often mahogany or pine, overlaid with highly figured veneers such as burr walnut or rosewood. They feature a central carved pillar supported by three or four scrolled legs, frequently fitted with castors.

Authentication involves examining the timber grain, veneer application, hand-cut dovetails or joinery, and the patina of the French polish. Original pieces from the era will exhibit period-appropriate hardware, hand-carved details, and natural wear consistent with nineteenth-century manufacturing techniques.

A period centre table can serve as a striking focal point in a contemporary living space or entrance hall, paired with minimalist seating to create visual contrast. It can also function as a compact dining table or display surface for modern ceramics and sculptural objects.

Antique walnut furniture requires protection from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations to prevent veneer cracking and fading. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth and occasional application of traditional beeswax help maintain the integrity of the French polished surface.
