Description

A fabulous French farmhouse table in oak, dating to the early 19th century, this has a beautiful colour and patina and will look great in a large country kitchen.

- Breadboard ends.

- Four plank top, with attractive square tenon ends visible along the long edges where the joints fix the top to the base.

- Lovely shaped cabriole legs.

- Single long, sectioned drawer at one end.

This will make a wonderful kitchen work surface, but provides an attractive option as a dining or breakfast table.

Early 19th century French farmhouse tables, often originating from regional provinces, are characterised by utilitarian construction, generous proportions, and regional vernacular details such as cabriole legs or stretcher bases.

These tables are traditionally constructed from locally sourced solid hardwoods, predominantly French oak, employing traditional joinery such as mortise and tenon joints, pegged construction, and hand-planed timber surfaces.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-correct tool marks, hand-cut joinery, timber shrinkage, natural patina from decades of use, and hardware or fasteners consistent with early 19th-century blacksmithing and carpentry.

An antique farmhouse table can be grounded in a contemporary setting by pairing it with minimalist seating, modern lighting fixtures, or contrasting textures to highlight its historical grain and construction.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight, cleaning with a damp cloth followed by immediate drying, and occasionally nourishing the timber with traditional beeswax.
