Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This pair of nineteenth-century Japanese Kutani ginger jars comes in porcelain with an iron-red glaze, enamel, and gold leaf. Each pot stands 13 cm high and 9.5 cm wide, complete with its original lid. The vessels feature hand-painted scenes of Karako children playing, set beneath cloud borders, leaf motifs, and gilt scrollwork. The glaze shows fine craquelure across the white background, and the lids display hand-painted gold scroll accents over the red finish. Makers marks appear on the bases, and the jars exhibit minor surface marks. Ideal for an English country house interior, these lidded jars suit display on a sideboard top in a living room, hallway, or dining space. They work well grouped together on a surface to add traditional Japanese Meiji period style and colour to a traditional room scheme.

FAQs

Kutani ware originates from the Kutani region of Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, dating back to the 17th century. It is historically recognised for its multi-coloured overglaze enamels, often featuring complex figurative scenes, floral motifs, and detailed scrollwork.

Kutani vessels are formed from dense kaolin clay porcelain, fired at high temperatures, and finished with overglaze enamel decoration. A hallmark palette includes iron-red pigments combined with delicate gold leaf detailing.

Authentic pieces frequently display red overglaze marks or signatures on the underside, detailed hand-painted brushwork rather than transfer prints, and characteristic iron-red and gilt colour schemes combined with traditional motifs like Karako children.

Pairing decorative vessels on a fireplace mantelpiece or console table adds warm visual interest. Grouping them alongside books, polished timber furniture, or brass accents balances traditional East Asian ceramics with modern interior schemes.

Dust gently with a clean, soft microfibre cloth. Avoid immersion in hot water or using harsh chemical cleaners, as strong detergents and abrasive materials can wear down overglaze hand painting and delicate surface gilding.
