A slip-top spoon features a straight, multi-faceted handle that is cut off diagonally at the end, a style popular in England during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Latten is a traditional copper alloy similar to brass, widely used for domestic implements before the widespread adoption of modern white metals.

These utensils were typically cast from latten, a durable yellow-coloured metal alloy composed primarily of copper, zinc, and small amounts of other metals. The alloy was melted and poured into bipartite moulds before being hand-finished.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-correct casting marks, correct alloy composition, and appropriate wear patterns consistent with age. Examination of the handle shape, bowl proportions, and surface patina helps determine the period of manufacture.

Such historic artifacts are typically displayed mounted on stands, within specialised display cabinets, or framed in shadow boxes to highlight their sculptural qualities and rich metallic surface texture.

Preservation requires a stable indoor climate with low humidity to prevent active corrosion or verdigris formation. Objects should be handled with clean cotton gloves, kept away from direct sunlight, and cleaned only with dry, soft microfiber cloths without chemical polishes.
