Brass Mounted Leather Gladstone Doctors Bag

1900 - 1920
Description

High quality leather Gladstone bag with brass mounts. Often referred to as a Doctors Bag. Circa 1920s.

The high grade leather and stitching is in excellent condition. The leather underside is of similar condition and sits slightly raised from the ground on 6 large protective brass studs. The closing mechanisms are of heavy duty brass construction at both ends, fully working, and rotate to an open or closed position. The central brass locking mechanism is also heavy duty with double-latching. Sorry no key.

There is a removable interior tray compartment with leather lining. The linen interior of the main bag is also in excellent condition with no tears, and forms two pockets inside the bag.

Additional Notes :

1. This is a large and heavy bag, approximately 9Kg: 70 cm width (length); 40 cm deep; 40 cm height (excluding the handles).

2. It's utility is closer to that of a travel bag as 'The Doctors Bag' would usually be smaller, lighter and more nimble for visiting patients.

3. The initials C. De B. are lightly embossed into the leather with gold leaf paint applied.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Named after British Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone, the Gladstone bag is a rigid-framed leather travel bag developed during the late nineteenth century. Its hinged top opening allowed easy access to contents, making it a standard accessory for physicians and travellers throughout the Victorian and Edwardian eras.

Authentic period Gladstone bags are constructed from heavy cowhide or pigskin leather stitched over a rigid hinged metal frame. Construction details include solid brass latches, keyhole locks, sturdy leather handles, and external buckled straps designed to secure the hinged top.

Authentic period examples feature thick leather with natural surface patina, hand-stitched seams, and solid brass hardware displaying subtle oxidisation. Many genuine period pieces also feature stamped initials, maker monograms, or original patent marks near the lock mechanism.

An antique Gladstone bag can be displayed on an open bookshelf, a console table, or a low bench to add architectural texture and historic character. It also serves as a decorative prop in home offices, gentlemans libraries, or boutique retail displays.

Keep the bag in a climate-controlled environment away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent the hide from drying or cracking. Periodically apply a natural leather conditioner with a soft cloth, and clean brass components gently without using harsh chemicals on adjacent leather.
