Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Ship wheels were introduced in the early 18th century to replace the tiller, allowing helmsmen to control larger vessels with greater ease. These hand-crafted wheels were essential navigation instruments on sailing ships throughout the 18th and 19th centuries before steam power and modern steering systems were adopted.

Traditional helms were primarily constructed from durable hardwoods resistant to marine environments, such as teak, oak, or mahogany. Metallic components like brass or bronze were routinely integrated for central hub mountings, structural reinforcement bands, and joint plates.

Authentic period ship helms display signifiers of genuine marine utility, including square-mortised brass central hubs, hand-turned timber handles showing honest surface wear, and brass fixings secured with slot-head screws rather than modern modern machine fittings.

An antique ship helm acts as a sculptural wall feature when mounted in focal areas such as above a fireplace mantel or console table. Its geometric form and rich timber tones provide visual contrast against clean neutral walls in coastal or eclectic interior schemes.

Maintain the timber by dusting with a soft, dry cloth and applying a beeswax polish occasionally to nourish dry surfaces. Avoid aggressive brass cleaners to preserve the natural aged patina and oxidisation that give historic fittings their character.
