A coffee can is a cylindrical, handleless or straight-handled ceramic cup produced during the 18th and early 19th centuries specifically for drinking strong coffee. During the Georgian era, these vessels were crafted by prominent English porcelain manufactories to mirror fashionable continental dining trends.

Early 19th-century pieces were typically crafted from soft-paste or bone china compositions, shaped using traditional throwing or casting methods. Artisans applied hand-painted enamel colours and hand-gilt metallic accents before firing the pieces in kilns at high temperatures.

Authenticity is determined by examining the paste consistency under magnification, checking for hand-applied gilding wear patterns, and identifying period-specific base marks or stylistic traits such as French-style angular handles. Genuine pieces often display minor firing imperfections and hand-crafted nuances absent in modern reproductions.

These historical objects can be displayed individually within glass-fronted cabinets, utilized as focal points on open shelving, or styled atop stackable books on a surface to introduce historic texture and artisanal character to a room.

Antique porcelain requires gentle hand washing in lukewarm water using a mild, non-abrasive detergent; dishwashers must be strictly avoided. Care should be taken to protect fragile hand-gilt surfaces from abrasive scrubbing and chemical exposure.
