R Wilkin Biblia 1728 Old & New Testaments Thumb Bible Miniature Book

18th century
Description

BIBLIA or a Practical Summary of ye Old & New Testaments.

London: R. Wilkin, 1728.

Printed for R. Wilkin. In St. Paul’s Church Yard, 1727.

As in most copies of the Biblia, this one contains Wilkin's handwritten "8" in the publication date on the main title page and again on an interior title page that marks the beginning of Volume II

In each instance the "8" is inked over the existing "7" in "1727," presumably to save the cost of printing new title pages a year after the date of original publication

This is the first English thumb Bible in prose, all earlier editions having been in verse.

Well illustrated with sixteen (now fifteen) charming copperplate engravings, including two frontispiece illustrations (one 'Holy Holy Holy' prior to the main text missing, see last photo).

Contemporary full calf elaborately decorated in gilt with silver clasp.

Good binding.

All edges gilt.

A pleasing copy of a rare miniature Bible.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A thumb bible is a miniature edition of the Bible or a abridged biblical text, designed to fit into a small pocket or the palm of a hand, popular during the 17th and 18th centuries.

Miniature books of this era were typically bound in calfskin or morocco leather over thin paperboards, featuring blind or gilt tooling, hand-stitched cotton rag paper pages, and brass or silver clasps.

Authentic period examples exhibit period-correct letterpress typography, chain lines and watermarks in rag paper, natural age patination on metal clasps, and characteristic Georgian decorative tooling.

These delicate volumes are best displayed inside a glass cloche, within a framed shadow box, or placed on a library desk or curio cabinet shelf away from direct light.

Store them in a climate-controlled environment with stable humidity levels around 45-50%, avoid direct sunlight to prevent drying or fading, and handle with clean, dry hands.
