A veterinary fleam is a historical medical instrument specifically designed and used for bloodletting in livestock, particularly horses and cattle, during the 18th and 19th centuries.

These instruments were typically constructed using a combination of forged steel for the sharp, folding blades and brass or iron for the protective outer casing or handle.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate hand-forged steel construction, genuine age-related patination on the brass, and often bear makers marks, initials, or registration numbers stamped into the metal.

Such items make exceptional display pieces in a study or library, often mounted in a shadow box frame or placed inside a glass cabinet alongside other historical curiosities.

To preserve the metal, keep the instrument in a stable, low-humidity environment and occasionally apply a microcrystalline wax to protect the steel and brass surfaces from oxidation.
