Description

A fine example of a mid 19thc brass and fruitwood "misers" snuff box....so named , because you can determine how much snuff you give to your friend or colleague, by closing up the holes,.... one hole being open is a small pinch of snuff .... to two holes being open is a generous pinch of snuff....it is nicely engraved on the underneath with an elaborate geometric pattern....the snuff box is in very good working order and came from the Brian Hawtin collection.

English. C1840-60.

A miser snuff box, typically dating from the 19th century, is a specialised pocket container featuring a clever sliding or spring-loaded brass mechanism designed to dispense small amounts of snuff or coins frugally.

These pieces were traditionally crafted from dense hardwoods such as fruitwood, boxwood, or mahogany, combined with brass or steel fittings, hinges, and sliding plates.

Authenticity is determined by genuine patina, hand-turned wooden body construction, period-correct brass gauge thickness, and functional mechanical wear consistent with nineteenth-century hand tools.

Small antique objects of curiosity work well when displayed on a bookshelf, within a glass cabinet, or as a focal point on a coffee table alongside art books.

Preserve the piece by keeping it away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations, applying occasional microcrystalline wax to the wood and avoiding abrasive metal cleaners on the brass.
