Bretby Art Pottery was established in 1883 by Henry Tooth and William Ault in Derbyshire, England. The pottery became known for producing decorative earthenware, including relief-moulded vessels, faux-bamboo, and Japonisme-inspired designs during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras.

Bretby jardinieres were constructed from earthenware clay using press-moulding techniques to form high-relief surface decoration. These vessels were finished with lead-based glazes, matte enamels, and painted details to imitate carved ivory, wood, or bamboo.

Authentic Bretby pottery usually displays an impressed sunburst crest mark alongside the word BRETBY and ENGLAND on the base. Items frequently feature four-digit shape numbers and registration marks stamped directly into the fired clay.

An antique ceramic jardiniere can be placed on a sideboard, console table, or wide window sill as a centerpiece. Positioning indoor greenery or ferns inside the vessel highlights the relief details and glazed ceramic tones.
