Pair of Masons Patent Ironstone China Desert Dishes

Description

A decorative antique pair of early 19th century Masons Patent Ironstone China desert dishes in the rare ‘leaves and wheels’ pattern, painted in an Imari palette with gilded highlights.

It has taken me a while to find out the name of this pattern, as it is not one that is seen very often. It is similar to the more common ‘Japan Basket’ pattern, but more intricate. The plates are hand decorated and the pattern varies slightly between them. These beautiful dishes would have been used as desert plates, and have a deep moulded shell like shape.

For sale as a pair.

Condition: No chips, cracks, damage or restoration to either plate, but the gold gliding is a worn on both where they have been handled.

Please note the dimensions given are approximate as the sizes vary ever so slightly between the plates.

Masons Patent Ironstone China was patented in Staffordshire, England, in 1813 by Charles James Mason. It was engineered as a durable, vitreous earthenware alternative to imported Chinese porcelain, renowned for its strength and vibrant hand-enamelled decorations.

Ironstone is composed of clay mixed with pulverized slag, flint, and feldspar to create a dense, hard-paste ceramic body. The pieces were fired at high temperatures and typically decorated with cobalt blue transfer printing, hand-applied enamels, and gold leaf gilding.

Authentic pieces generally bear a crowned printed or impressed manufacturer mark on the underside, often reading Masons Patent Ironstone China. They also feature distinct visual weight, subtle bluish-grey earthenware body tones, and complex Imari-inspired colour palettes.
