19th Century Late English Regency Period Penwork Games/chess Table

19th century
Description

An Anglo-Indian Late Regency Period Penwork Games or Chess Table.

This lovely table is ebonised and decorated with inlaid panels in the tripartite platform base and penwork on the top. Supported by a turned central column. The two ivory rings and wonderful reeded bun feet are clear indicators that this piece was produced in India for the English market. The games board, which can be used for draughts or chess etc., has a beautiful border of English taste penwork with scrolls, flowers and exotic birds in the chinoiserie style. The inlay on the feet is of a more formal character associated with baroque ornament in Europe. This table is a fusion of design influences, of cultures and of cabinetmaking techniques.

A highly decorative piece of furniture.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Penwork is a decorative technique popular during the early 19th century in Britain, involving light or lacquered wood decorated with fine black ink drawings depicting classical, oriental, or botanical motifs.

These tables were typically constructed from solid timber coated in black lacquer or paint, detailed with India ink illustrations, and protected with a clear varnish overlay.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-drawn line work with subtle variations in ink density, natural surface craquelure in the protective varnish, and traditional period joinery on the pedestal support.

Place the table in a fireplace alcove, library nook, or beside a reading chair to serve as a decorative focal point and functional accent piece.

Dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth and avoid water or spirit-based chemical polish, which can dissolve the historical lacquer and inkwork.
