Description

A large and impressive antique French marble top console / centre table. This was made in France, we would date it from around the 1890-1910 period.

It is of superb quality, with stunning carving throughout. It is a great size and is carved on all sides, so can be used as a free standing item as a centre piece table, or it can be used against a wall as a console table. The gilt wood finish has a gorgeous patina, with just the right amount of wear. This has a gorgeous marble top that has amazing purple, white and grey tones.

This is in excellent condition for its age, with just some minor surface wear and some minor cracks to the carving, nothing that affects the structural integrity.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Gilded surfaces require dusting with a soft, dry cloth without chemical polishes to protect the delicate leaf, while marble tops benefit from periodic sealing and immediate wiping of acidic spills to prevent staining.

Such a table functions effectively as a focal point in a minimalist space, creating a contrasting juxtaposition when paired with modern abstract art or clean-lined architectural elements.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved details with tool marks, natural ageing of the gilt layer, traditional joinery methods such as mortise and tenon, and heavy natural marble slabs with period-appropriate edge profiles.

These tables are traditionally constructed from solid hardwoods such as oak or beech that are hand-carved, gessoed, and gilded with gold leaf or paint, finished with a fitted natural marble top.

The French Rococo style is characterised by asymmetrical designs, elaborate scrollwork, natural motifs such as acanthus leaves, and curved cabriole legs, reflecting the ornate aesthetics of the 18th century.
