Opera glasses emerged in the 18th century as compact Galilean binoculars designed for theatre-goers to enhance stage visibility, becoming particularly ornate and popular during the Victorian and Edwardian periods.

They were typically constructed with a brass or gilt metal frame, featuring barrel inlays of mother of pearl, enamel, tortoiseshell, or leather, alongside glass lenses.

Authenticity is generally determined by maker marks inscribed on the eye-pieces or focus wheel, the weight of the brass, genuine iridescent nacre panels, and period-appropriate mechanical construction.

They can be displayed on a mantelpiece, styled inside a glass-fronted cabinet, or placed on a stack of coffee table books as a decorative curiosity.

Keep them in a dry environment away from direct sunlight, clean brass gently with a soft microfibre cloth without harsh chemicals, and handle the mother of pearl panels with care to prevent cracking.
