This exquisite Italian Neoclassical Design console table dates back to circa 1880 and its design draws inspiration from Classical Greek art emphasising the use of symmetry, clean lines, and classical motifs.

The table is crafted from ebonised wood, meaning it has been stained or painted black to resemble ebony wood giving it a dark, rich appearance. This technique was popular during the 19th century. Adding further elegance and sophistication it also features a highly prized white marble top which was used during this era for its durability.

The apron is decorated with a gilt metal Grecian key pattern. This geometric motif, also known as a Greek fret, is characterized by interlocking right angles. The four gilt metal female classically robed figures with wings, likely representing Nike, the Greek Goddess of Victory, depicted on the legs holding up the apron and marble top symbolise Victory and Triumph. The stretcher rail features a central gilt metal lion mask; lions were associated with strength and nobility in classical art. The gilt metal accents all provide decorative embellishments.

This console table combines classical influences with elegant materials such as the ebonised wood, white marble, and gilt metal creating a harmonious blend that reflects the Neoclassical style. A console table such as this would have been used to showcase decorative objects, vases, or sculptures and would have been a statement piece in a 19th Century interior.
