Description

A classy table from a firm who designed and made the famous 'Jupe' radially extending circular dining table. Fully stamped to the underside with maker's details and number, which probably relates to a client of the firm. In the later decades of the 19th century Johnstone & Jeanes supplied furniture to Queen Victoria at Buckingham Palace.

Unrestored country house condition. Surface fading, a few spots of historic worm (image 6) and lacking one finial, the frame is structurally sound and tight.

I can have the table restored if required at a cost of £200.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Preserve antique wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, applying occasional microcrystalline wax, and avoiding synthetic cleaning products.

Such pieces function well as statement furniture in large open spaces or libraries, anchored by minimalist modern seating to highlight the historic craftsmanship.

Authenticity is determined by traditional joinery methods, patination of the wood, makers marks or stamps, and period-accurate carving styles such as barley-twist or spiral turning.

These tables were typically crafted from dense hardwoods like walnut or mahogany, often featuring intricate hand-carved elements and solid timber construction.

Victorian centre tables were prominently displayed in the middle of large reception rooms and libraries, serving both decorative and functional purposes during the 19th century.
