Such a table would have been made for use on a country estate, used for office paperwork and collecting land rent from tenants. This particular table came from a country house in Staffordshire. The table comprises a solid two-plank oak top, above two working drawers, with a cock-beaded fronts. The oak-lined drawers are constructed with hand-dovetail joints and incorporates later Georgian oval brass handles and backplates. The drawer runs smoothly and closes flush to the frame. The Georgian oak side table stands on four simple block legs and retains the original backboards to the rear. The table has been constructed in the traditional manner for that period, with mortice and tenon joints and peg construction. Ideal for use a side table in a hallway, or even a small writing desk. The Georgian oak side table is solid in joint and ready to use.
Condition Report:
This is a decorative antique English provincial Georgian oak side table, also known as an “Estate table”, with two drawers, circa 1810, displaying a rich dark oak colour, in good condition. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges and top, but nothing significant considering the age of the item (see photos). The drawers are in good working order, they close flush to the frame and retain the original oak drawer linings. Later Georgian period brass handles to the drawer fronts. The oak Estate table features the original top and backboard to the rear. The frame has been constructed in the traditional manner for that period. As the Estate table boasts the original polish, it has a lovely rich colour and patination. This country table is well constructed, solid in joint and ready to use.
