The George I period, spanning from 1714 to 1727, marked a transition from walnut to mahogany as the preferred timber in English cabinetmaking. Furniture from this era is characterised by symmetrical proportions, graceful cabriole legs, pad or ball-and-claw feet, and restrained decorative carving such as shell motifs.
