This Victorian tole grocery hopper from 1860 combines functional design with decorative flair. The piece takes the form of a footed scoop mounted on a flared pedestal base, featuring a curved back panel and an open-front channel designed to hold a wine bottle. Constructed from painted toleware in rich red, the surface displays intricate gold floral stencilling along the body and base. Rolled brass rims trace the upper edges, the base perimeter, and the upright back edge, complementing a polished interior brass liner that gleams within the central trough. Natural signs of age appear as gentle wear to the painted and gilded surfaces, enhancing its antique character. Measuring 19.7 cm high, 19 cm wide, and 27.9 cm deep, this compact accessory sits gracefully on a sideboard top or drinks cabinet in a dining room, living space, or study, serving as both a decorative accent and a practical bottle holder.

Toleware refers to decorative objects crafted from lacquered or japanned sheet metal, predominantly iron or tinplate. Popularised in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, these items feature painted, stencilled, or gilded embellishments for decorative and functional domestic use.

These pieces were formed from hand-cut sheet iron, shaped over wooden formers, coated with protective lacquer or paint, and finished with soldered brass rims or liners to reinforce high-wear edges.

Authentic nineteenth-century toleware displays hand-soldered seams, natural surface craquelure, age-appropriate loss to the painted lacquering exposing dark iron, and hand-applied or stencilled foliage motifs.

In contemporary interiors, a painted toleware hopper serves as a functional wine bottle holder on a sideboard, a tabletop centrepiece, or an accent piece on a kitchen counter.

Dust the item gently using a dry, soft microfibre cloth. Avoid water, liquid detergents, and abrasive polishes on painted surfaces to prevent stripping the gilded decoration or lacquer coating.
