Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A stick balance, or steelyard scale, is an unequal-arm weighing instrument consisting of a wooden or metal beam, a fulcrum, a sliding weight, and hooks for the load. Originating in antiquity, these portable scales were widely used across maritime trade routes, including Dutch Colonial territories, for measuring merchant goods.

Traditional 19th-century stick balances were constructed using dense hardwoods for the graduated beam, combined with wrought iron or brass for hooks, rings, and suspension fittings. The sliding counterweight was typically cast from brass or iron to provide precise ballast against the measured goods.

Authentic 19th-century pieces feature hand-carved increment marks along the hardwood beam, original patinated wrought iron hooks, and solid brass weights. Evidence of hand-forging, hand-cut brass components, and natural wear around suspension points distinguish genuine period items from modern reproductions.

A stick balance makes a striking wall-mounted display item in a study, library, or hallway when hung against a neutral background. It can also be positioned on a floating shelf or suspended within a wall alcove to showcase its mechanical silhouette and aged metallic patina.

Keep the balance in a climate-controlled environment away from direct sunlight to prevent the hardwood beam from warping or splitting. Clean metal components gently with a dry soft cloth, avoiding harsh chemical polishes that strip away historical surface oxidisation.
