Description

Drawing inspiration from tables from Hoshiarpur in north west India, this exotic looking table was made in one of the most isolated areas of the British Isles, Castletown lies to the east of Thurso, see map.

The firm was founded in 1890 and are probably best known for their sophisticated interpretation of the Caithness chair, adhering to the form, while carving the frame intricately and profusely with chip-carved details. Another example of a well-known Scottish form re-imagined by the firm and also available is the Creepie stool in the latter images.

A related table is illustrated in 'McIvor & Allan, Chip-carvers of Castletown c.1890-c.1955' by James Dunster, written in conjunction with an exhibition of their work by The Casteltown Heritage Society, 2001.

Creepie Stool (lacking section of foot) 22.5cm wide x 41cm wide x 22cm deep £40

The table is in good condition overall and structurally rock-solid. There is slight fading to the top and a couple of small gaps between the carved panels. The stool is in similar condition, but missing a section of foot!
