Indian Circa 1900 Ornately Decorated Octagonal Wooden Container

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Whites Antiques
Description

Antique Indian ornately decorated wooden container

* Indian circa 1900

* Ornate and exquisite hand paint decoration

* Very good solid original condition

* Octagonal sides depicting vibrantly coloured images

* In lovely condition and retaining the original vibrant colour scheme

* H: 31cm (12.2") Di: 30cm (11.8")

I've been experimenting with 'Dopamine Décor' recently and on dreary days it does make a difference and this little piece has charmed me completely! This cheerful turn of the century hand decorated Indian wooden vintage waste basket or potted plant container circa 1900 is in very good solid all original condition with a great naturally time worn look that is so pleasing to the eye. The octagonal sides are painted with a combination of scenes, some depicting stylised floral arrangements and others of Asian female dancers in traditional dress and the colours are still very vibrant.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, artisan workshops in northern and western India produced painted wooden decorative objects for domestic use and export to the Western market. These items combined traditional Rajasthani and Mughal artwork with utilitarian forms tailored to European tastes.

These pieces were constructed from regional dense hardwoods such as teak or mango wood, glued or pinned together into faceted or rounded forms. Decorative surfaces were finished using natural mineral pigments, lac, or tempera paints, often bordered by bone, ivory, or painted imitation inlay.

Authentic period pieces exhibit natural wood shrinkage along panel joins, uneven hand-cut wood construction, and surface craquelure or wear on exposed edges. Pigment layers often show oxidation and subtle fading consistent with age rather than uniform artificial distressing.

A painted octagonal vessel serves as a functional focal point when placed on a sideboard, console table, or open shelving. It is commonly styled as an planter cover, a wastepaper bin, or a catch-all container to add colour and historic pattern to neutral rooms.

Dust gently using a soft, clean dry brush or microfibre cloth. Avoid using liquid cleaners, wax polishes, or water, as moisture can compromise the painted tempera or lacquer finish, and keep the object away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
