Louis XVI Style French Bureau Plat After Zweiner

19th century
Description

A fine quality, elegant late 19th century French Louis XV style Kingwood serpentine shaped bureau plat, having an inset suede covered writing surface, a single frieze drawer, wonderful gilded ormolu mounts with entwined leaf decoration, the central mount representing a military helmet and flag. Raised on elegant cabriole legs terminating in scrolling ormolu feet.

Attributed to Joseph- Emmanuel Zweiner.

Joseph-Emmanuel Zwiener (b. 1849) was a preeminent cabinetmaker (ébéniste) of German descent, who became one of the most famous furniture makers in late 19th Century Europe. Zwiener specialised in reproducing the designs of Louis XV pieces from public collections, which he then adapted with his own innovative interpretation of the traditional Rococo style.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A bureau plat is a flat-topped French writing table, introduced during the 17th century, featuring a wide writing surface often inset with leather and supported by four legs, decorated with gilt-bronze mounts.

High-quality French writing tables incorporate native and exotic hardwood veneers such as kingwood or rosewood arranged in parquetry, accented by cast gilt-bronze ormolu mounts and leather writing inserts.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-chased gilt-bronze mounts with natural patination, hand-cut joinery, dovetailed drawer construction, and heavy oak or pine carcase frames beneath timber veneer.

Position the writing table as a freestanding focal piece in a study or living space, pairing its rich timber and brass detailing with contemporary seating to create contrast.

Dust the wooden and gilt surfaces regularly with a soft dry cloth, treat the leather insert with specialist wax conditioner, and maintain stable ambient humidity to prevent veneer movement.
