Burr walnut veneer gained immense popularity during the late 17th century in the William and Mary period, and saw a significant revival during the Victorian and Edwardian eras due to its highly figured, swirling grain patterns.

These pieces typically feature thin slices of burr walnut veneer applied to secondary woods like pine or oak using animal protein glues, often complemented by solid walnut carved components such as cabriole legs.

Authenticity is identified through hand-cut dovetails, traditional joinery, natural oxidisation under the finish, irregular grain patterns unique to veneer slices, and signs of age such as minor shrinkage cracks in the wood.

Pairing this rich wooden piece with neutral upholstery, modern lighting, and minimalist surrounding decor creates a balanced contrast that highlights the intricate textures of the burr grain.

Maintain antique wooden surfaces by keeping them away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a dry cloth, and occasionally applying traditional beeswax to nourish the finish.
