Chinese Silk Embroidered Kimono Panels - 19th Century

19th century
Description

Here are two Chinese embroidered silk kimono sleeve panels, presented mounted in a gilt frame, dating to the late 19th Century or early 20th Century.

Having studied the panels closely I wonder if they might have once formed the  sleeves of a wedding gown, as the design features a couple set on some of the major landmarks of life, surrounded by flowers, trees, mountains and rivers. One sleeve is topped by the sun and the other the moon.

The design is worked onto cream silk in hues of blues and creams and features extensive gold thread-work which really catches the light. The majority of the embroidery is wrought in 'the forbidden stitch', so called because the fineness of the work was said to cause eyestrain to the needleworker or even blindness!

The panel measures 55cm tall by 25cm wide framed, the image itself being 49cm by 17 cm. Its in great condition with the colours still bright and vibrant.

I offer free delivery across mainland UK, and am very happy to help with quotes for shipping abroad.

Please do not hesitate to get in touch if I can provide any further information or photographs.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
