This Victorian jockey scale armchair dates from 1890 and is constructed from mahogany, leather, brass and iron in dark brown and black colourways. The piece incorporates a built-in balance scale with hanging brass weights, a button-tufted black leather backrest, and turned wooden legs terminating in brass castors. Additional details visible include spindled armrest supports, a pull-out drawer with decorative brass hardware, and brass stud trim along the edges of the seat and armrests. The timber shows a polished finish with warm reddish-brown tones. Measuring 96.5 cm high, 83.3 cm wide and 55.8 cm deep, this specialist seating object serves as a decorative focal point in a traditional study, home office, or library setting.

Jockey scale chairs were developed in the nineteenth century for racecourses, sporting clubs, and private estates to accurately weigh jockeys before and after races. Manufacturers such as W & T Avery integrated precision balance scales directly into armchair frames to allow comfortable and accurate measurements.

Traditional jockey scales were constructed using dense hardwoods such as mahogany or oak, fitted with cast iron scale columns, brass balance beams, nesting weights, and button-tufted leather upholstery.

Authentic pieces generally feature stamped brass makers plates or cast lettering reading W & T Avery Birmingham, period-correct brass counterweights, authentic joinery on the wooden base, and original ironwork with painted or gilded detailing.

A jockey scale chair serves as a focal conversational piece in a study, home library, entrance hall, or gentlemans library scheme, paired alongside classic timber furniture, brass accents, and traditional artwork.

Maintain the mahogany structure by dusting with a soft cloth and applying beeswax occasionally. Clean leather upholstery with dedicated leather conditioner, and keep brass counterweights free of moisture to prevent aggressive tarnishing.
