Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 18TH CENTURY:
Hand-cut drawer joints in thick timber: cabinet work from before mechanised sawmills.
Natural shrinkage lines along the top: centuries of timber movement across the grain.
Hand-sawn marquetry veneers: varied thickness and natural shading created by hot sand.
Slender cabriole legs with pad feet: eighteenth-century Low Countries form.
Dark oxidisation inside the drawer lining: decades of unvarnished exposure to air.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This eighteenth-century Dutch Baroque games table originates from the period, constructed in walnut and fruitwood with a warm brown timber finish. The rectangular folding top exhibits shaped dog-eared corners, set above a fitted frieze decorated with floral and foliate marquetry inlays alongside a small side drawer with a tiny metal pull handle. The structure is supported by slender, curved cabriole legs terminating in pad feet, showing visible signs of age and very slight surface wear. Measuring 76 cm high, 77 cm wide, and 39 cm deep, the table provides compact proportions suited for smaller spaces. In a modern home, this piece suits placement in a living room, hallway, or empty corner as an accent surface or side table. The folding top mechanism allows the surface to remain closed for display or open for use as a card table, combining decorative marquetry work with functional antique furniture design.

FAQs

An 18th-century Dutch marquetry games table is a fold-over wooden table produced in the Netherlands, designed for playing cards and board games. These tables feature decorative floral or geometric marquetry inlays and often fold down into compact side tables when not in use.

Cabinetmakers primarily used solid walnut or oak frameworks veneered with figured walnut, fruitwoods, boxwood, and holly to create intricate contrasting floral patterns and decorative borders.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut marquetry inlays, period-appropriate joinery such as hand-dovetailed drawers, original timber shrinkage lines, and characteristic Dutch Baroque motifs like cabriole legs and shaped dog-eared corners.

When folded shut, the table functions as an accent console in an entryway, a decorative hall table beneath artwork, or a side table in a formal living room.

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources and fluctuating humidity to prevent veneer lifting. Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply beeswax periodically to protect the timber surface.
