In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

FAQs

French farmhouse tables originated in rural France, where they served as the central workspace and gathering place for large families. Built to withstand daily use, these tables reflect the practical needs of agrarian life combined with regional woodworking traditions.

These tables are traditionally constructed from heavy local timber such as French oak, utilizing mortise and tenon joints with pegged construction. The tops often feature thick planks secured to sturdy trestle or pillar bases designed to support heavy weights.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-planed surfaces, traditional joinery without modern metal screws, and natural wear patterns consistent with age. Variations in timber grain and evidence of historical repairs often indicate genuine period construction.

Pairing the table with contemporary seating creates a striking contrast that highlights the natural grain and historical character of the wood. It anchors an open-plan dining space, adding warmth and tactile texture to minimalist or industrial schemes.

Maintain the wood by avoiding direct sunlight and excessive heat fluctuations which can cause splitting. Clean regularly with a soft, dry cloth and nourish the surface periodically with natural beeswax to protect the finish.
