This large early 20th century terracotta olive jar embodies a rustic country style, originating from 1910. The vessel displays a distressed white painted finish over a textured surface, revealing mottled brown earth tones beneath the weathered coating, incised horizontal banding around the body, and a distinct tapered base. The wide rim tops a stout shoulder, giving the piece a grounded silhouette. It stands 66 cm high, 46 cm wide, and 46 cm deep. In a home today, this piece suits placement in an empty corner as a floor-standing decorative object or alternatively serves as a base for a table lamp. The heavy patina provides an aged aesthetic well suited to rustic farmhouse interiors, grounding neutral spaces with architectural form and muted tones. The substantial scale creates a strong visual presence without requiring additional styling.

FAQs

Olive jars are traditional earthenware storage containers historically used throughout Mediterranean regions for preserving and transporting olive oil, wine, grains, and cured foods.

These vessels were hand-thrown from local terracotta clay, wheel-turned or coil-built, and kiln-fired. Many featured glazed interiors to prevent liquid seepage and painted or whitewashed exteriors.

Authentic jars display natural wear, irregular surface textures, hand-moulded rims, and a distressed patina created by decades of exposure and usage rather than artificial distressing.

Designers often utilise large olive jars as standalone floor sculptures in entryway foyers, empty corners, or beside fireplaces to introduce organic texture and historical depth.

Clean painted terracotta with a soft, dry brush or microfibre cloth to remove dust. Avoid water or chemical cleaners that might lift fragile, flaking paint, and keep indoor pieces away from extreme moisture.
