Set of 3 French Louis Xvi Surtout De Table Mirrored Table Displays

18th century
Description

Set of 3 French Louis XVI Surtout de Table Mirrored Table Displays

* French Louis XVI (23 August 1754 – 21 January 1793) 18th Century

This exquisite three sectioned mirrored plateau of rounded rectangular Surtout de Table with pierced and chased balustrade gallery, the whole lifted on blossoming toupie feet, would enhance the elegance of any dining table. These centrepieces reigned supreme throughout the 1700s and the whole of the 1800s.

A toupie foot is a type of furniture foot that dates back to the late 17th century and is often associated with the Louis XIV period. It is characterized by a turned, circular shape that resembles a spinning top or toupie in French. The toupie foot is typically found on case pieces such as chests, commodes, and tables.

It was in the 17th century when the surtout de table first appeared. It was designed to hold condiments and candles. However, its major purpose was to protect the surface of the table from damage due to the spillage of vinegar and salt. By the 18th century, salt cellars were introduced, thus rendering the surtout de table a mere ornamental centrepiece.
